Metalcore four-piece Afterlife have released the single “Miles Away,” along with a new music video to accompany the track. The song is the latest to be released ahead of the group’s upcoming record, Part Of Me, due Aug. 13 via Hopeless Records.

Alternative Press is bringing you the premiere of the new track and video. Vocalist Tyler Levenson addressed how difficult it was for him to write due to the vulnerability it required.

“I would consider ‘Miles Away’ to be one of the most personal songs on the album, next to the title track ‘Part Of Me,’” Levenson says. “This was one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write considering how recent the events were to me recording the song and it being one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to go through, not only because of the heartbreak, but the internal realizations I was experiencing at the time.

“I knew while writing ‘Miles Away’ that it was incredibly important to be as vulnerable as possible, otherwise the song wouldn’t feel right to me,” Levenson continues. “The lyrics had to come naturally and be honest no matter how difficult it was for me, and I really think that is shown in the song. In my experience of going through a relationship ending, I learned a very valuable lesson that stuck with me more than anything: Don’t wait until it’s too late. ‘Miles Away’ is just one of those songs you need to sit back and listen to because musically, it’s the softest song we’ve ever released, but lyrically, it’s the heaviest.”

“Miles Away” comes after the release of a string of singles, including “Envy,” released in July. Of the track, Levenson shared how the band—which is made up of Levenson, Andrew McGuire (guitarist), Luke Walkinshaw (drummer) and Tristan Edwards (bassist)—were driven to create something completely unlike anything they’ve done before.

“Our goal with ‘Envy’ from the start was to create a song that would keep you on the edge of your seat, a heavy track, but heavy in a way that the band has never done before,” he says. “Heavy in a way that was exciting and fresh, which I firmly believe we did. This song is very much a cautionary tale or warning about how the ‘grass isn’t always greener on the other side’ and how being envious of someone or something is often a dangerous feeling. [The song is about] wanting something that someone else has or seeing another person’s life and wishing it was you, or [thinking] your life would be better if things were different, which ultimately leaves you feeling unsatisfied once you obtain what you thought you wanted.”

The rest of the album will tackle similarly difficult topics, such as mental health, domestic assault, political apathy and the weight of guilt, through 10 tracks influenced by everything from Slipknot to Linkin Park to modern hip-hop

The band has also announced an album release show in their hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida, on Aug. 15 to celebrate Part Of Me. Additionally, they will be featured on the Voragos Cruise with Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, Mastodon and more, setting sail Feb. 16.
