Good Saddles Ain’t Cheap from The Doug Flowers Band

The Doug Flowers Band hails from down around Augusta, GA. Consisting of five veteran grassers, they have released a debut album called Brothersville.

The title comes partly from the fact that the group includes two sets of brothers – Doug Flowers on mandolin and his brother, Dwayne, on bass, with Aaron Lamb on banjo and his brother, Joshua, on guitar – but also because the town where the Flowers brother live, Hephzibah, GA, was originally called Brothersville back in the day. The cover design carries a mid-19th century vibe in tribute to the town’s history.

Edward Dalton completes the band on lead guitar, and all but Joshua take a share of the lead and harmony vocals.

A debut single from the Brothersville project is available, a reworking of Good Saddles Ain’t Cheap, released by country artist Justin McBride in 2007.

Doug takes the lead on this one, and he shares a bit of the reason why they chose this to lead off the record.

“It has great advice told from the perspective of ‘you get what you pay for my friend.’ Mega hit songwriters Wynn Varble, Gerald Smith and Kevin Denney wrote this as a slower tune for country, but we liked it ‘grassed up.’”
