Photo Credit: HuluHulu has announced the release date for the upcoming XXXTentacion documentary, ‘Look At Me.’
The documentary will explore the rise of the rapper’s fame on SoundCloud and beyond. ‘Look At Me‘ is debuting on June 10. But fans attending SXSW got an early premiere of the film on March 15. Rapper 50 Cent also recently posted a picture of himself screening the documentary with XXXTentacion’s family.
“It’s finally here – a film that takes you through the complicated life of a troubled and controversial genius, XXXTentacion,” writes the rapper’s estate. “‘Look At Me‘ explores how Florida teenager Jahseh Onfroy became SoundCloud rapper XXXTentacion, one of the most streamed artists on the planet.”
“Through frank commentary from family, friends, romantic partners, and unseen archival footage, director Sabaah Folayan offers a sensitive portrayal of an artist whose acts of violence, raw musical talent, and open struggles with mental health left an indelible mark on his generation before his death at the age of 20.”
The rapper’s final album, ?, has spent four years on the Billboard 200 chart. The project debuted in the #1 spot in March 2018 and has appeared on the chart every year since. Once the documentary drops in June, XXXTentacion’s streaming numbers will likely go through the roof again.
Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” saw an explosion in streaming popularity after it was included in ‘The Batman.’ The XXXTentacion documentary is also debuting just eight days before the fourth anniversary of his death. The rapper was tragically gunned down outside the Riva Motorsports store in Deerfield Beach, Florida on June 18, 2018.
According to police reports, the rapper was shot multiple times in the neck and was in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at 5:30 pm. Four men have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the slaying. If convicted, they face life in prison without parole – or the death penalty.
Investigators in the case believe the killing was targeted and not random. They have obtained video of the rapper’s alleged killers stalking him throughout the motorsports store where the rapper was looking at motorcycles. The four men arranged to stop him, rob him, and then killed him. “Boatwright walked back one or two feet away from Onfroy’s vehicle, grabbed his rifle, looked Onfroy in the eyes and fired six shots, killing him,” the police report reads.
