Nardo Wick – Who Is Nardo Wick?

0

Nardo Wick’s year has evolved into a flurry of headlines, controversy, and helter-skelter singles. Still only 19 years old, the rap riser sits with the world at his feet – and as introductory statements go, ‘Who Is Nardo Wick?’ is a sublime fusion of incredible promise, high profile co-signs, and punchy penmanship.

Each track on ‘Who Is Nardo Wick?’ feels finessed, concise, and potent. Rarely breaching the three minute mark, Nardo’s songwriting makes it point and then moves on, delivering rugged, club-ready rap music that melds together underground styles in the process. ‘Wickman’ and ‘Chop Chop’ are bold early anthems, the choppy, repeating lines in the chorus pushing home his message.

‘Me Or Sum’ is the first indication of Nardo’s enhanced clout, with the Jacksonville artist joined by Future and Lil Baby. It’s not a spurious feature, though – a real standout, ‘Me Or Sum’ uses its guests wisely, allowing their talents to expand his world. Hit-Boy’s turn on ‘Power’ follows suit, while ‘Who Want Smoke??’ bangs together Nardo with G Herbo, Lil Durk, and 21 Savage.

Yet the central figure remains the point of focus. ‘Wicked Freestyle’ finds Nardo Wick bringing it back to basics, illustrating his control of the mic while doing so. ‘Shhh’ carries an aura of menace, while the taut strings on closing cut ‘Rich Maniac’ have a cinematic sweep.

In a year dotted with much-hyped rap hopefuls Nardo Wick has found a way to move beyond the headlines, focussing on his art in the process. Finding the balance between personal passions and co-sign culture, ‘Who Is Nardo Wick?’ acts as the perfect introduction, cutting through the noise and letting his innovative voice speak its truth.

8/10
