Video Premiere: Wonder from Birds of Play

In addition to their clever name, Birds of Play are a Colorado quartet of string players who write, record, and perform original music inspired by the natural beauty of their home in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride.

The group consists of Alex Paul and Jack Tolan on guitar and mandolin, Eric Shedd on bass, mandolin, and guitar, and Anneke Dean on fiddle. All four share in the singing on music primarily written by Paul, who declares a vision for the band that couldn’t be more Colorado.

“We are multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, community members, adventurers, and the dearest of friends. Our musicality seeks to weave together a unique tapestry of influences into a playful blend of humor, honesty, vulnerability, and harmony. Our mission is to use our music and platform to uplift as many humans as possible while making this world a kinder, gentler, more loving place.”

The second recording from Birds of Play, Murmurations Volume 1, is out now, and we have a music video premiere today of one of the tracks. It’s a song called Wonder, which celebrates the sense of awe we feel when we contemplate elements larger than ourselves.

Alex says the germ of the song came while walking among the great mountains of Colorado.

“The inspiration for this song initially came on a hike from Ophir to Telluride a few years back. I was pondering the constant shifts and changes that take place on the mountain, and became aware of the fact that mountains, much like people, are far more processes than static things. Wonder is a guiding force in our lives, within and outside of the musical realm. This song and video aim to connect us all to the myriad forces greater than ourselves that inspire us to revel in the mystery and wonder of it all!”
