Mariah Carey has spent decades making the impossible look effortless, but lately even some of her most devoted fans are wondering whether the icon is carrying far more than she lets on.
Social media has filled with clips from concerts and public appearances where we have questioned her movement onstage, vocal performances and overall energy. Yes, she is 35 years in the game and has endured an extraordinary amount of personal loss.

In April 2018, Mariah revealed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder in 2001 – yes that far back. This was following what she described as an emotional and physical breakdown. She told People magazine she had lived for years in denial and isolation but eventually got help. Since making that disclosure, she has continued recording, touring and headlining her annual, epic Christmas concerts

In August 2024, Mariah her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Allison Carey, died on the same day. She wrote that her “heart is broken” but was grateful to have spent the final week with her mother before her death.
Behind the scenes, Mariah also weathered years of turmoil within her professional circle. She was getting hit from all sides. Former manager Stella Bulochnikov and former executive assistant Lianna Shakhnazarian both came at her sideways.
To this day, Mariah remains one of the most successful artists in music history. She has sold more than 220 million records worldwide. She has scored 19 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, more than any solo artist in history!
Some believe they are simply watching a 57-year-old music legend perform differently than she did in her twenties. Others wonder whether years of personal grief, public scrutiny and professional demands have taken a visible toll.
