Some collaborations feel inevitable, and COLD FRONT is exactly that kind of project. After years of working together, Perth artists Goon and Daunt have finally created their first full-length collaborative album, and the result is an ambitious, emotionally rich, and sonically adventurous body of work that showcases the very best of both artists. Spanning 18 tracks, COLD FRONT is a carefully crafted journey through heartbreak, self-reflection, healing, and personal growth.
What immediately stands out is the chemistry between Goon and Daunt. Having collaborated countless times over the years, their creative partnership feels effortless. Goon’s introspective lyricism and memorable melodies sit perfectly on top of Daunt’s dynamic production, which effortlessly blends laidback house grooves, bass-heavy hip hop, atmospheric electronic textures, and R&B influences. The first half of COLD FRONT explores the darker emotions surrounding broken relationships, addiction, regret, and toxic cycles. Tracks like “EZ2FORGET”, “P4P”, “LOVE LESS”, and “POTENT” showcase some of Goon’s strongest songwriting to date, balancing vulnerability with clever wordplay that never feels forced. Meanwhile, Daunt’s production creates immersive soundscapes that perfectly complement the emotional weight of the lyrics without overwhelming them.
The turning point arrives with “CLOSURE”, where both the energy and outlook begin to shift. From there, the album embraces acceptance and optimism, leading into standout moments like “UWA”, the uplifting “YEARNING”, and the entertaining “ADDRESS”, where Daunt confidently steps behind the microphone for one of his first official vocal performances. It’s refreshing to hear him expand his artistic role beyond production, adding another layer to an already impressive project.
The closing track, “EX-FACTOR”, serves as a fitting finale. Rather than offering simple answers, it captures the ongoing internal struggle between holding onto the past and moving forward. It’s an emotional conclusion that perfectly reinforces the album’s central themes while leaving listeners wanting to experience the journey again from the beginning.
The guest appearances throughout COLD FRONT never distract from the album’s identity. Wesley Black, Nxlly, Lil Ducky, and Lozza each bring something unique to their respective tracks, adding fresh perspectives while allowing Goon and Daunt to remain firmly at the centre of the project. The features feel like natural extensions of Perth’s thriving creative community rather than obligatory collaborations.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of COLD FRONT lies behind the music itself. The album represents the first full-length release to emerge entirely from Hive6, the South Perth studio that Goon and Daunt spent two years building together from the ground up. Every beat was produced, every vocal recorded, every mix perfected, and every master completed in-house by Daunt himself. That level of independence speaks volumes about their dedication to their craft and gives the project an authenticity that can’t be manufactured.
COLD FRONT is the sound of two artists trusting each other’s strengths while continuously pushing one another creatively.
