Mahershala Ali has officially moved on from Marvel’s long delayed “Blade” reboot, closing the chapter on one of the MCU’s most frustrating unfinished projects after years of setbacks.
Mahershala Ali finally closed the door on Blade after years of delays leaving Marvel Studios to face what may become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most painful missed opportunities.
After nearly seven years of false starts, rewrites and director changes, the two time Academy Award winner confirmed he is no longer attached to the role that many believed could have redefined one of Marvel’s most beloved supernatural heroes.
“For whatever reason, that project isn’t for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, I have moved on,” Ali said in an interview with GQ. “[Marvel] didn’t want to do it, they should answer that question.”
His comments effectively end one of the MCU’s longest running development sagas. Marvel Studios first unveiled Ali as Blade during San Diego Comic Con in July 2019, generating enormous excitement after the actor made a surprise appearance to announce his casting. Instead of becoming a flagship franchise, the project spent years cycling through creative teams.

“You had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie… I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them.”
Director Bassam Tariq exited in 2022 shortly before production was expected to begin. Yann Demange later took over before departing in 2024. Multiple writers also came and went as Marvel repeatedly searched for the right direction. Reports indicated the screenplay underwent numerous revisions before the studio ultimately removed “Blade” from its theatrical release schedule in late 2024.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has not hidden his disappointment over how everything unfolded.
Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Feige admitted, “I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.”
Feige added that seeing Wesley Snipes reprise Blade in 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” was exciting, but it did not erase his frustration over failing to launch Ali’s version of the character.
The Marvel executive later acknowledged the prolonged development reflected a larger problem inside the studio. As Marvel expanded aggressively into Disney+ programming, Feige said quantity began taking priority over quality.
“We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique,” Feige explained.
“It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great.’ And it wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time. We didn’t feel like, as we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production. We didn’t feel confident that we could do that on ‘Blade,’ and we didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us.”
Ali, a consummate professional, never appeared to lose enthusiasm despite the setbacks. While promoting “Jurassic World Rebirth” last year, he made it clear he was still hoping the project would move forward.
“I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready,” he told Variety.
Now that Ali has officially stepped away, Marvel faces an uncomfortable reality. A two time Oscar winner with the dramatic weight, physical presence and undeniable charisma to reinvent Blade is no longer waiting.
Whether the studio eventually revives the vampire hunter remains unknown, but the version many fans spent years anticipating appears to be gone for good.
