24 years ago today, Lil Wayne continued his evolution from Hot Boys standout to future Hip Hop icon with the release of his third solo album, 500 Degreez, on Cash Money Records and Universal Records.
Released on July 23, 2002, the album arrived at a pivotal moment in Wayne’s career. At just 19 years old, the New Orleans lyricist was beginning to step out of the shadow of Cash Money’s group success and establish himself as a solo force. While 500 Degreez didn’t receive the same acclaim as the albums that would follow, it represented an important bridge between Wayne’s early years and the legendary run that would eventually redefine mixtape culture and modern rap.
Produced primarily by Mannie Fresh, the album carried the signature Cash Money sound with booming bass, infectious bounce rhythms and Southern swagger. Standout tracks like “Way of Life” featuring Big Tymers and TQ, “Bloodline” featuring Birdman, “Gangsta Shit” and the title track showcased Wayne’s growing confidence as an emcee while highlighting the chemistry that made the Cash Money roster one of Hip Hop’s most dominant labels during the early 2000s.
Commercially, 500 Degreez debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, selling more than 176,000 copies in its first week. The album was later certified Gold by the RIAA, proving Wayne could carry a major release on his own as he continued developing the lyrical style that would eventually earn him recognition as one of rap’s greatest wordsmiths.
Although many fans point to Tha Carter in 2004 as the true beginning of Lil Wayne’s historic run, 500 Degreez deserves its flowers as the project that laid the groundwork. It captured a hungry young artist sharpening his pen and preparing for the remarkable career that would follow.
