His new single, “Whatchu Say,” is the second offering from his expansive upcoming LP, Sun, and it demonstrates a deliberate pivot from club-focused house toward a sophisticated, hybrid soul sound that is truly genre-spanning. This single is less a simple throwback and more a seamless, deeply studied update of classic songwriting ideals. We start with a soulful sundrenched, insistent piano motif that feels indebted to the rhythmic complexity of jazz composition, an area where Crackazat has formal training. This persistently feel-good pulse frames a composition that knowingly winks at the sophisticated funk lineage of the 1980s, particularly the deep-cut grooves of Brit-Funk and the effervescent, polyrhythmic energy channeled by artists like Tania Maria. There’s a bit of an acid-house feel to the single too, with moments of Primal scream or Happy Mondays
