Two members of the Wu-Tang Clan affiliated hip-hop group Brooklyn Zu were murdered in Portland.
Relatives of the rappers have confirmed 12 O’Clock and Murdock were victims. Portland police identified the men as cousins Odion Turner, 50 (12 O’Clock) and David Turner, 45 (Murdock). Both men were killed at the scene, while four other people were wounded. One person remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
“So I’m out of town away from home on business, and I get the call that they murdered my father,” Divine Turner wrote on Instagram. “I don’t know what to do. It’s a sad day for me; they assassinated my father in Oregon.”
Young Dirty Bastard, son of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, wrote on Instagram, “Rip 12 O’Clock. Rip Murdock. They were my father’s tightest blood bonds. My two older cousins was just assassinated. Love ya’ll. Blood Forever. Brooklyn Zu.”
The Portland Police have not released many details surrounding the shooting of Brooklyn Zu members.
A home surveillance video caught nearly 20 gunshots ringing in the street and a car speeding away in the early morning. The two men were in a tan-colored RV trailer with Odion’s younger brother. Someone knocked on the front door and asked for a cigarette. When Murdock opened the door, the stranger fired multiple times at 12 O’Clock and Murdock.
Police say they found a trail of blood leading from a bullet-riddled minivan into a nearby home. A memorial for the two men has been set up for fans to leave photos, notes, and balloons to honor the rappers. The two members had family in Portland, which became their home as the two cousins toured and performed.
Stephon Turner, who goes by ‘Raison Allah’ and ‘Zookeeper’ says he believes the killing was motivated by hate and jealousy. Turner says he used to tour with the two cousins and open shows for Ol’ Dirty Bastard. He spoke to his brother and cousin last Friday, as they were planning a new album and tour.
Brooklyn Zu made its debut after featuring on an Ol’ Dirty Bastard record from 1995. The group consisted of Ol’ Dirty Bastard and four of the artists’ younger family members, including the two Turner cousins.
“It’s just unfortunate, especially that happening, coming on the day before national Hip-Hop Day. Today was the birth of hip-hop 48 years ago,” says O.G. One, Co-Founder of Hip-Hop Day in Portland.
