Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” listens have surged on music streaming services after the release of ‘The Batman.’
Robert Pattinson’s emo take on the caped crusader also includes the Nevermind deep-cut – twice. The inclusion of the song has earned it 3.1 million on-demand streams in the U.S. within the first four day’s of the film’s release (March 4-7).
In the four days before the film’s release, the Nirvana song only saw 372,000 on-demand streams. That’s a 734% increase in music streams over the given period after the release of ‘The Batman.’
Those streams continued to wrack up on March 6 to March 7, increasing from 808,000 to 1.5 million. By March 9, the song appeared in the top five list of Spotify’s Daily USA Top 50 Songs. The increase in listeners also propelled the song into the Billboard charts, reaching #6 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Song chart, #20 on the Digital Song Sales chart, and #27 on the Billboard Streaming Songs chart.

“Something in the Way” was first featured in a trailer for ‘The Batman’ in 2020. It serves as a background for Bruce Wayne’s monologues in the movie. When the first trailer for The Batman dropped, the song also saw a massive boost in relevance on the charts, reaching #2 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart.
Director Matt Reeves says Kurt Cobain inspired the direction of this depiction of Batman. “Early on, when I was writing, I started listening to Nirvana, and there was something about ‘Something in the Way,’ which is in the first trailer, which is part of the voice of that character,” Reeves says.
“What if some tragedy happened and this guy becomes so reclusive, we don’t know what he’s doing? I this guy some kind of wayward, reckless drug addict? And the truth is that he is kind of a drug addict. His drug is addiction to this drive for revenge. He’s like a Batman Kurt Cobain.”
