The New Orleans legend explained his position during a Friends Keep Secrets appearance, referencing his 2023 performance at the White House’s 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop celebration and noting the venue desperately needed proper indoor facilities for major events.

“I’m so glad to hear Trump say when they was mad at him about building the ballroom and he was like, everything we do we have to do it on the damn lawn,” Wayne said on the podcast. “So people who don’t know nothin’ hearin’ that thinkin’ he just bein’ Trump no, for real, I was glad to hear him saying that.”
His reasoning cuts through the noise, and according to Mediaite, the ballroom project gained momentum after Trump announced it in 2025 with construction beginning that September.
The ballroom project gained urgency after an assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April 2026, with Trump arguing the secure indoor venue was essential for protecting future events and dignitaries.
Wayne’s connection to Trump runs deeper than most realize.
He met the president in October 2020, posted a photo praising Trump’s “Platinum Plan” for Black America, and received a full pardon on January 20, 2021, for illegal firearm possession charges that could’ve landed him a decade in federal prison.
Lil Wayne was even asked to perform at Trump’s 2025 inauguration but declined due to prior commitments, yet his continued public backing suggests his relationship with the administration remains strong and strategic.
What makes this moment significant is how it mirrors Nicki Minaj’s own political transformation.
Lil Wayne signed Minaj to Young Money back in 2009, and she has since become one of Trump’s most vocal celebrity supporters, calling herself the president’s “number one fan” and attending his January 2026 Treasury Department summit.
Minaj has stated that repeated “bullying” of Trump during the 2024 election cycle pushed her toward MAGA politics, a shift that’s created tension with other industry figures but solidified her alignment with Wayne’s worldview.
