Beyoncé drops “Morning Dew (Donk)” as a Fourth of July surprise, marking her first new music in two years and kicking off a countdown to her B’Day 20th Anniversary celebration.
Beyoncé just handed the BeyHive the ultimate Fourth of July gift, dropping “Morning Dew (Donk)” without any warning or buildup whatsoever.
The production team behind this one reads like a who’s who of hit-makers. Pharrell Williams and The-Dream joined Beyoncé in the writing room alongside Darius Dixon, with Beyoncé and Pharrell handling production duties together.
The track marks her first new music in two years and serves as the opening salvo for a 60-day countdown leading straight into her birthday and a full re-issue of her landmark 2006 album B’Day.
B’Day itself was a cultural moment when it dropped on September 4, 2006 worldwide and September 5 stateside.
The album moved 541,196 copies in its first week and immediately claimed the number one spot on the US Billboard 200 chart.
Beyoncé’s history of surprise drops has always been about control and connection, from her self-titled visual album to Lemonade and Renaissance, each one rewriting how the industry thinks about album releases.
The new track comes with a lyric video directed by Cliff Watts, the same creative mind who shot Beyoncé’s iconic Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover around her 25th birthday.
