‘New fear unlocked while shopping.’
A Houston woman is going through the racks at Burlington when she observes a cockroach crawling on one of the dresses. Here is why she’s so concerned.
TikTok creator Glo (@iam_glo) posted a video with the creepy crawler last week. The video shows a pile of dresses on the floor near a clothing rack. She then focuses on one of the dresses still on the rack, which is white with a brown floral print. There is a roach crawling on the fabric.
In the caption, Glo writes, “It’s the roach queen for me in Burlington. That’s why I go to Marshalls.”
What Is the Bug Crawling on This Burlington Dress?
In the comments section of the video, a segment of viewers expressed outrage about the bug Glo found at her local Burlington. Others, however, said it’s not a roach at all but instead a “palmetto bug,” which many consider a fairly normal part of the environment in Texas.
One commenter said, “I would’ve passed out and died.”
A second person joked, “He ain’t bothering nobody; he shopping.”
“It’s a free gift with purchase,” a third person said.
Someone else said, “And this is exactly why you’re supposed to wash your clothes after you buy them. Just because it’s fresh off the track, don’t mean it’s fresh off allat bacteria.”
Is This Bug a Roach or a Palmetto Bug?
According to Orkin, this is actually a very common debate. Essentially, what a lot of people refer to as a “palmetto bug” is just a large species of cockroach—in particular, the American or smokybrown cockroaches.
And, contrary to popular belief, these bugs can absolutely infest homes and other buildings. The bugs are associated with palmetto trees found in the southern United States, which is why they’re called that.
A Reddit user posted to r/Georgia a couple of years ago to ask why many people seem to believe that palmetto bugs don’t infest. One person said, “Can they infest? Sure. Do they generally? No. They come in when it has been super dry and they are looking for water. They come in when it’s really rainy looking to avoid water. A clean house just isn’t a great spot for them. They aren’t like a German roach where if you see one there are 10,000 in your walls.”
A second person said, “Yeah, this right here. OP, you better get used to seeing a couple of roaches every once in a while. Especially renting an apartment. It’s just part of life for the most part. It shouldn’t be like you’re seeing a few every day, then I’d say it’s an issue.”
Someone else said, “They sure do infest on occasion. I’ve seen them take over attics, and they’re hard to get rid of because they can just keep coming in from outside when the population gets low.”
Another person added, “If you see a couple here or there…. Welcome to Georgia. If they are omnipresent, [you’ve] got a problem.”
AllHipHop contacted Glo via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. We also contacted Burlington via email for comment. This story will be updated if either responds.
