
Danny Simmons, the acclaimed artist, poet and longtime creative mentor whose influence reached far beyond his famous family, has died, leaving behind a lasting legacy of compassion and artistic expression.
Danny Simmons, the older brother of Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons and rapper Rev Run of Run–D.M.C., has passed away. He was an abstract expressionist artist, author, poet and philanthropist that contributed greatly to the world of art.
Danny Simmons spent a lifetime creating art while his family built empires in music and entertainment. His cause of death was not immediately revealed.
His death was announced by Russell Simmons, who shared a heartfelt tribute reflecting on their close bond.
“He was the true artist in the family. Joey and I went into music—him as a poet and rapper, me as a producer—but he was the one who created from the deepest place,” Russell Simmons wrote on Instagram. “His poetry, art, and ideas shaped how we think and gave us the freedom to dream beyond limits.”
Danny Simmons carved out a path distinct from his famous siblings, supporting the arts. While Russell Simmons became one of Hip-Hop’s most influential executives and their brother Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons rose to fame as a founding member of Run-D.M.C., Danny Simmons became a respected force in visual art and community development.
Danny Simmons also helped conceive Def Poetry Jam, the widely popular spoken word/slam poetry event that eventually becoming an HBO series (2002-2007) through Russell Simmons. Initially, it gained notoriety through a successful Broadway run.

Beyond his artistic accomplishments, Danny Simmons was widely recognized as a mentor and advocate for creators, using his platform to elevate artists who often struggled to find opportunities in traditional spaces. His work consistently reflected themes of humanity, culture and spiritual exploration.
Russell Simmons also described his older brother as the emotional center of the family.
“He was the most compassionate of us, always the first to sacrifice, the most honest and loving,” Simmons said. “Danny was my best friend. We spoke every day. He taught me how to be a better human being and how to be a man.”
The family also released an official statement celebrating Simmons’ life and contributions.
“It is with a profound sense of loss that we honor and celebrate the life of Danny Simmons Jr., a beacon of love and creativity,” the statement read. “He was not just a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and loving husband; he was a vibrant artist, dedicated supporter of creatives, and a cherished friend.”
The statement continued, “Though he has transitioned from this world, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and artistic brilliance will forever shine brightly in our hearts.”
According to Russell Simmons, the loss is deeply personal. The brothers maintained a daily connection and shared a relationship built on mutual respect, honesty and love.
Danny Simmons is survived by his wife, Keia Simmons, and his son, Jamel Simmons.
Danny Simmons had an influence that stretched far beyond galleries and poetry readings. In a family synonymous with cultural impact, Danny Simmons stood apart as the quiet visionary whose creativity inspired others to dream bigger, love deeper and live with greater purpose.
