Rising vocalist Sekou is expanding the story told on his mixtape, In A World We Don’t Belong, with a second installment.
Like the preceding Pt. 1, In A World We Don’t Belong Pt. 2 contains five tracks, including the lead, “Dangerous Lover.” While Pt. 1 explored the bliss of finding new love, Pt. 2 offers a sobering look at the complicated reality that may arise with love. Opening with “Does She Know,” Sekou confronts a potential partner who is living a double life. “If she was my girl, I would tell her the truth,” he sings.
Regarding the track, Sekou said, “Sometimes in life you will meet people who will just feed you everything you want to hear and I think. When I make music, I really like to put my real feelings into a song and make something relatable and that’s what I feel I created for ‘Does She Know.’”
He continued, “Sometimes in life you will meet people who will just feed you everything you want to hear and it’s about a situation where you’re oblivious to someone’s true colours, until one day you finally find out the real them. I feel like I’ve grown up so much and started to figure out a lot in the last year and this song showcases some of that vulnerability.”
“Needy,” another confrontational, addresses an estranged lover who only pops up when it’s convenient. “You like to keep me like a secret, no one can know about / As if you’re ashamed to be with me,” Sekou croons. He closes the project with “Songbird,” a stunning cover of Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 classic.
“When I was making this project, I honestly just wanted to tell my story and express how I feel as a 21-year-old boy,” Sekou said of the mixtape. “Especially being Black, sometimes it feels like you have to work ten times harder. In A World We Don’t Belong just felt right to me because I’ve often felt like an outcast in my life, but there’s such a beauty in that. This music is a true reflection of figuring your life out and becoming who you want to be.”
Sekou is currently on his In A World We Don’t Belong Summer Tour. His upcoming stops include San Francisco, Seattle and the Montreux Jazz Festival. He will conclude the tour Sept. 4 at Place de la Libération in Dijon, France.
Sekou’s In World We Don’t Be Long Pt. 2 arrives seven months after the initial installment. The former included tracks such as the Barry White-inspired “Never Gunna Give You Up” and the boundary-setting “Catching Bodies.”
