The Internet has a new album on the way. During an interview on The New York Times’ Popcast podcast, members Syd, Steve Lacy and Matt Martians confirmed they have been working on a follow-up to 2018’s Hive Mind.
“We’ve been working on it, on and off, for four or five years,” Martians told hosts Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli. “We’ve just been in and out of the studio and it just built to this moment. We didn’t plan for it to be almost finished around this [solo album] situation. We want to do things that aren’t money plays with the Internet. That’s part of the reason why we did our solo thing, so when we come to the Internet, we can do things we think are cool.”
During their hour-long conversation, which covered everything from their formation to their solo endeavors, they confirmed the new Internet album is set to release in early 2027. Lacy teased that a new single could arrive as early as this year. “If you’re lucky, I mean, maybe a song. That would be fun,” he said.
When asked how they know what fits for The Internet versus their solo material, Syd said, “When we’re making something together and we feel excited about it, that’s usually a good sign. And then we’ve also submitted things from our own collections for the album. She went on to reveal that each of them contributed to the production. “We have Steve beats on the album, there’s a Syd beat on the album. And then Matt’s been sampling other beats of ours.”
In a separate interview with Dazed, Syd gave another update on the progress of The Internet’s upcoming fifth album. “We’re in a good place with it,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of it done. It’s foundationally there and built.” She mentioned that Martians took the lead on songwriting while the other members focused on finishing their solo projects. “Matt has been masterminding the album and bringing things to me to record,” Syd added. “Honestly, this album is going to be one for the books.”
Three of the members — Syd, Steve Lacy and Chris Crispy — all dropped their solo albums on the same day (July 17). Syd’s third solo album, Beard (Free Lunch/Warner Records), includes the Blu June-assisted “Callin,” plus collaborations with Big Sean, James Fauntleroy and Jordan Ward.
Lacy’s third album, Oh yeah? (RCA Records), features the lead single “Nice Shoes,” as well as appearances from Erykah Badu, SZA and Cecile Believe. As for Crispy, the drummer made his solo debut with Behind The Shades, released independently. The project includes a feature from Syd, who appears on “Hidden Feelings.” Martians last project, Matt’s Missing, was released in 2024.
Before The Internet returns with new music, Syd and Lacy plan on touring their respective albums. The group is also expected to hit the road sometime next year. No dates have been revealed.
