Drake’s ICEMAN is more than an album – it is a ferocious debate that includes the White House, Michael Jackson and MAGA politics.
So, quite a bit of controversy has been stirred up around Drake.
Drake. What’s going on here? His new album ICEMAN just dropped, and now us locked into a full-blown debate over politics, racism and even MAGA.
If you’re a Drake fan, you probably think this whole thing is ridiculous. If you can’t stand him, you probably think all of this confirms whatever you already believed about him.
The first thing people focused on was the album title itself. Ever since Drake announced ICEMAN, some people felt uncomfortable with the name because of everything tied to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) over the last year. Across the country, immigration raids, deportations and detention centers popped up. Families have been separated, communities have been shaken up and people are in terror – STILL. So for some people, the album title immediately felt insensitive. Like, “Dude…read the room.” But, Ok.
Then the album finally dropped May 15 and things got even stranger.

The cover art features imagery connected to Michael Jackson, including the famous glove aesthetic that became part of Jackson’s signature look. Drake has compared himself to Michael Jackson for years when it comes to fame, influence and chart dominance, so the inspiration was obvious. We will leave that there, but remember Kendrick did too.
But then the White House social media account reposted the artwork with an iced-out MAGA chain added to it. That changed the entire conversation IMMEDIATELY.

At the same time, people started circulating images and clips of Drake making the “OK” hand gesture. Some brushed it off immediately. Others claimed it looked like a symbol that has been associated with extremist groups – within the White House and in the mountains alike – over the last several years. We ain’t gonna sugar coat this.
This is how they get down…
Well, that was about as subtle as a train wreck, on a boat.

That’s when Scarface, one Brad Jordan, weighed in publicly. However, I think he got tricked by the White House image.
“Here’s another good one…(with a “WP” hand sign as the image) This means White Power, the word maga was typed at the bottom of that hand gesture on Drake’s album and I know they know what that meant because I know what it means how could they not? and this was posted from the White House’s page time to go.”
Now social media is chock-full of theories saying Drake is quietly aligning himself with MAGA or signaling to right-wing audiences. Other people think the accusations are completely unfair.
After looking deeper into it, there’s another layer people are bringing up. Drake has reportedly spent huge money collecting Michael Jackson memorabilia, most notably that glittery glove. Is Drake is simply recreating iconic Michael Jackson visuals? Or does he know full well how these mages will be interpreted in 2026?
Back in Michael Jackson’s era, people did not look at every hand sign, pose or symbol through a political lens. Michael used similar gestures in photos and performances, and nobody thought twice about it. There was no widespread belief that it represented racism or extremism. And to be clear, there is no serious argument that Michael Jackson supported anything connected to white supremacy. That was never his image.
But culture has changed. Symbols that once meant nothing now carry completely different meanings online, especially in political spaces.
Some people think Drake is being careless. Others think he’s far too aware of media culture not to understand how this would be received.
Another thing adding fuel to the discussion is Drake criticizing DJ Khaled on the album for not speaking strongly enough about Palestine. Critics quickly pointed out that Drake himself has not exactly been outspoken on the issue either outside of broad cease-fire messaging that many celebrities signed.
That contradiction is part of why people are questioning everything around this rollout.
To be fair, there is no evidence Drake supports white nationalist politics or MAGA ideology, but he has a song about Confederates love him now. Yeah, that’s new. I suppose being hate by the hood will do something to a man. Even though, I admit, I do not think the hood hates Drake. Perception matters. Nicki is MAGA. Wayne is MAGA. Well, I am starting to see a pattern. Here are those lyrics on “Fortworth” by Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR.
“I’m getting booked in Little Rock, Arkansas
New Haven, Connecticut, and places where they probably still fly the Confederate
I’m all alone in the United States of America
And who’s, who’s back at home takin’ care of ya?
Bus rides, I’m counting LaQuintas out the window
Tough times, people love to act like we ain’t been through those
The AC is broken, my hotel, it’s hot as hell
Runnin’ out of sodas, I might walk to Circle K by myself”
Michael Jackson was hated by racists. There’s almost no similarities so we have to gut the thought. I do not care what your lenses say.
Comment your thoughts below. Are people overreacting, or do you think Drake knew exactly what he was doing?
