Micheal Ward’s trial begins as the Top Boy star faces rape and sexual assault charges he firmly denies in London court.
Micheal Ward walked into Snaresbrook Crown Court this week facing two rape charges and three counts of sexual assault, all of which he’s denied.
The 28-year-old British actor, who built his career on Netflix’s Top Boy and the film Blue Story, has maintained that everything between him and the alleged victim was consensual.
The trial’s opening day centered on what the woman told police after the alleged incident in 2023.
Jurors heard her recorded interview where she described feeling “numb” and “scared,” saying she wanted “it all to be over.”
She also claimed that when she tried to leave the vehicle where the encounter happened, she was told to shut the door.
According to BBC News, prosecutors say the two met at an event in London that evening, and their interactions continued later that night at a different location.
The woman’s account painted a picture of escalating pressure.
She said she initially agreed to kissing and intimate contact, but prosecutors allege things became non-consensual. Ward’s defense team maintains the sexual activity stayed consensual throughout.
The woman told police she felt “pressured” during parts of the encounter and ordered an STI kit afterward, checking a box that indicated she believed she’d been sexually assaulted.
Ward, who was born in Jamaica and raised in London, rose to prominence playing Jamie in Top Boy before expanding into film roles.
He won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020 and earned nominations for his work in Small Axe and Empire of Light.
His career trajectory has been marked by critical acclaim and industry recognition, making this trial a significant moment in his professional life.
The trial continues with additional evidence and witness testimony expected.
After his arrest in January 2023, Ward told police in a statement: “I deny the allegation of rape. I want to put on record that we had consensual foreplay and consensual sex.” The outcome of this case will determine whether one of Britain’s most celebrated young actors returns to his career or faces criminal convictions that could permanently alter his professional future.
